Linda is thirty-one years old, single, outspoken, and very bright. She majored in philosophy. As a student, she was deeply concerned with issues of discrimination and social justice, and also participated in antinuclear demonstrations.
After reading the sketch, people were asked which of two alternatives was more probable:
- Linda is a bank teller.
- Linda is a bank teller and is active in the feminist movement.
The vast majority of people incorrectly choose the second option. This is a logical error known as the “conjunction fallacy.” A more specific event (being a feminist and a bank teller) cannot be more probable than a more general event (being a bank teller). Every feminist bank teller is, after all, a bank teller.
So why do we make this mistake? Our intuitive System 1 confuses the plausibility of the story with the mathematical probability of the event. The details about Linda being a feminist make for a more coherent and therefore more plausible narrative. System 1’s instinct is to latch onto the better story, ignoring the cold logic of probability.
The most coherent stories are not necessarily the most probable, but they are plausible, and the notions of coherence, plausibility, and probability are easily confused by the unwary.
4. We’re All Terrible at Planning (Because We Ignore Everyone Else’s Failures)
The planning fallacy is the tendency for plans and forecasts to be unrealistically close to best-case scenarios. Kahneman illustrates this with a dramatic personal story about a curriculum development project he was part of.
His team had been working for a year and, when asked to forecast the project’s completion, their collective estimate was between one and a half and two and a half years. This was their inside view: a forecast built from a narrative of their specific plans and abilities.
Kahneman then turned to a curriculum expert on the team, Seymour, and asked him a different question: “How long did it take other, similar teams you’ve known to finish their projects?” This question forced Seymour to adopt the outside view: to ignore his own team’s narrative and ask, “What happened when other people were in this situation?”

5. Your Memory of an Experience Is Not the Experience Itself
Kahneman distinguishes between the experiencing self, which lives in the present moment, and the remembering self, which tells the story of our lives after the fact. When we make decisions, we often consult the remembering self, but its memories are systematically biased.
The remembering self is governed by two key principles:
- The Peak-End Rule: It gives disproportionate weight to the most intense moment (the peak) and the final moment (the end) of an experience.
- Duration Neglect: It almost completely ignores the length of the experience.

While their experiencing self suffered 30 extra seconds of pain, their remembering self kept a “better” memory of the longer trial simply because it had a less painful ending.
